How to Recognize A Real Ruby from A Fake:

Home | Blog Home | How to Recognize A Real Ruby from A Fake: Published July 1, 2024

Let’s talk a little bit about RUBIES.

Ruby is one of the most beautiful gemstones in the market. Its deep ruby red color semblances Passion and Love and is most notably associated with royalty and wisdom.  Rubies are also considered as an amulet to ward off nightmares and danger. Ruby is the second hardest gemstone after the diamond, and the brighter red rubies are usually found in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Kenya and Afghanistan.

That being said, Distinguishing Authentic Ruby Fine Jewelry from fake ones can be challenging, as there are various synthetic gemstones and treatments that mimic the appearance of genuine rubies. However, here are some key factors to consider when trying to determine the authenticity of a ruby:

Color: Examine the color of the stone. Rubies typically exhibit a deep red hue, ranging from medium to dark tones. Be cautious if the color appears too vibrant, as it could indicate a synthetic stone. Clarity: Genuine rubies often have some inclusions (internal flaws) due to the natural formation process. If you notice flawless clarity or see bubbles, scratches, or air pockets within the stone, it may be a fake. Cut: Assess the cut and shape of the gemstone. A well-cut ruby will have symmetrical facets and reflect light evenly. Poorly cut or irregularly shaped stones could be an indication of a fake. Hardness: Rubies are one of the hardest gemstones, scoring 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. If a stone scratches easily or shows signs of wear, it may not be a genuine ruby. Weight: Consider the weight of the stone. Real rubies are denser than most synthetic alternatives, so if a stone of comparable size feels unusually lightweight, it could be a fake. Heat resistance: Rubies are highly heat-resistant. You can perform a basic heat test by briefly exposing the stone to a flame (using tweezers and precautions) and observing its reaction. A genuine ruby will not be affected, while a fake one might get damaged or discolored. Authentication by a professional: When in doubt, consult a reputable gemologist or jeweler who can examine the stone using specialized equipment and techniques to provide a conclusive assessment.

It’s important to note that some synthetic rubies can closely resemble natural ones, and advanced laboratory techniques are required to differentiate them accurately. Therefore, if you have a valuable ruby or are considering a significant purchase, seeking professional expertise is advisable.  Dover Jewelry has a vast collection of Authentic Ruby Gemstone Jewelry to guide you as well.

Today we’re going to teach you how to tell if a Ruby is real or fake. Here are a few simple steps:

Ruby Scratch Tests

As we mentioned earlier, Ruby is one of the hardest gemstones, therefore it should not be easily scratched:

With a damp of cloth or a toothbrush clean the ruby, in order to remove any debris or marks. Then dig your fingernail into the gemstone to see if you can leave a scratch. If you can, it’s not a real ruby. Scratch the ruby with a series of items, use a knife, sandpaper and a piece of glass, none of these elements should scratch the stone. If after the process there’s no noticeable effect, then the gem is likely to be real. Drag the ruby across a porcelain plate, if your ruby leaves any color streak behind is more likely to any other type or substance. The absence of a streak isn’t definitive confirmation but the presence of color confirms that it isn’t real.

Clarity of Ruby

Rubies have consistent clarity. If the stone is not the same clarity throughout, it may not be a real ruby.

Cut relative to size

Most rubies that are over ½ carat will be cut in a complex shape, such a pear or cushion shape. A round shape in a large ruby is a clear signal that it may be fake.

How to protect your investment, take care of your gemstones

Since rubies are so hard and durable, they are very easy to care for but is not recommended to wear them when bathing or in a pool, or near the presence of harsh chemicals. They should be keep away from other pieces of jewelry, as they may scratch other, particularly softer gemstones.

For cleaning, you can use soapy water and a brush, or a commercial jewelry cleanser. It is important to rinse the stone thoroughly and dry it, after cleaning it.
